Head of PR and Communications

The morning the apps land in the stores, parents read about it in the newsletters they trust. Your pitch put it there.

Tatako is hiring its first Head of PR and Communications to bring real family life and a very ticklish octopus into the stories parents, educators and business readers follow. Press strategy, launch moments, spokespeople and, later, the PR team are yours to build.

About Tatako

Tatako makes short spoken English lessons for little ones. A lesson takes about five minutes, there is nothing to read, and a small round octopus keeps everyone company. He has eight arms, no socks, and usually loses count at seven.

Spanish stays the language of home, and Tatako adds a little English on top. An optional Spanish guide voice explains what to do and switches off anytime. Every lesson has three small steps: Hear it, say it. Touch it. Name it. In the last step the picture comes back without the word, and the child names it first.

The course has 369 first words and phrases, from “hello” and “mommy” to colors, animals and what the teacher says at preschool. Tatako works in the browser on any phone or tablet, and we start with Spanish-speaking families across the United States.

The role

  • Remote and full-time, open to candidates who live in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee or Arizona
  • Fluent English
  • You report directly to the founders

By day 90, the press page is up on tatako.com, every spokesperson is ready for a live interview, and the app launch plan has its stories, outlets and timing.

What you will do

  • Build relationships across the English-language parenting, education, family, tech and business press, and the podcasts and newsletters around them, pitching each one a story made for its readers.
  • Plan the launch moments, starting with the apps arriving in the App Store and Google Play: the embargo list, the exclusive, the press kit and follow-up stories for the weeks after.
  • Find story angles in real family life: two languages at one breakfast table, five minutes in the car before preschool, bedtime words, always with a parent’s written consent before a child is named or filmed.
  • Make the octopus a media character with a home on the press page at tatako.com: a short bio, approved artwork and clips of him waving, next to the fact sheet, logos, screenshots and one press contact.
  • Build the message house on the product itself, from the three small steps and the optional Spanish guide voice to the grown-up’s two-minute marks, and rehearse every spokesperson for camera, radio and podcasts.
  • Get ready for the hard day: a crisis plan for children’s privacy built with the engineers, holding statements, a one-hour approval path, and plain facts on hand, like keeping ad tracking out of the lessons.
  • Hire and guide the PR team as Tatako grows: the roles, the agency question, the weekly rhythm and the standard every pitch meets.

What you bring

  • 8+ years in PR or communications, including leading press for a consumer tech, family or education brand.
  • Reporters, editors and podcast producers in parenting, education and tech who know you, and media lists in Muck Rack or Cision you keep current.
  • A launch you led from embargo to coverage, and a clear view of why each story landed.
  • A writer’s hand: a pitch in three sentences, a release that reads like news, a statement that holds under pressure.
  • Media training experience: you have prepared leaders for live TV, radio and podcasts, and you sat in the room when it counted.
  • Calm in a hard moment, and enough command of COPPA and children’s privacy to explain both to a reporter in plain words.

Bonus points

  • You have turned a mascot or character into a media personality.
  • You have earned business press for a young company.

Why you will love it

  • A launch worth covering: the apps arrive in the stores, and the story is yours to shape.
  • An octopus reporters remember, and families whose mornings make the story.
  • How Tatako sounds in the press is yours to set, and so is the team that carries it.
