Analytics Engineer
A dad marks “red” as “Can say” at bedtime. By morning every report counts it exactly once. The pipeline in between is yours.
Tatako is hiring its first Analytics Engineer to give the company one trusted source of numbers. The tracking plan, the warehouse, the pipelines and the tested models behind every report are yours to design and run.
About Tatako
Tatako makes short spoken English lessons for little ones. A lesson takes about five minutes, there is nothing to read, and a small round octopus keeps everyone company. He has eight arms, no socks, and usually loses count at seven.
Spanish stays the language of home, and Tatako adds a little English on top. An optional Spanish guide voice explains what to do and switches off anytime. Every lesson has three small steps: Hear it, say it. Touch it. Name it. In the last step the picture comes back without the word, and the child names it first.
The course has 369 first words and phrases, from “hello” and “mommy” to colors, animals and what the teacher says at preschool. Tatako works in the browser on any phone or tablet, and we start with Spanish-speaking families across the United States.
The role
- Remote and full-time, open to candidates who live in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee or Arizona
- Fluent English
- You report directly to the founders
By day 90, events from the browser app land in BigQuery tested and on time, each core metric has one written definition, and the coming apps have a tracking plan ready.
What you will do
- Own the tracking plan across web, iOS and Android before the apps reach the stores: typed event schemas, versions in GitHub and CI checks that fail a build when an event drifts from the plan.
- Model the lesson in dbt, staging to marts: the three small steps, themes that go round, and snapshots that keep every mark a grown-up gives, from New to Can say, across the 369 words and phrases.
- Run the warehouse and pipelines: BigQuery tables partitioned by day and clustered for common questions, Apache Airflow with retries and backfills, and sampled tables for quick looks.
- Write each metric once and use it everywhere: a finished lesson, an active family counted once across phone and tablet, a word marked Can say, the same in Looker Studio, Tableau and every notebook.
- Set data quality alerts that speak up before a dashboard goes wrong: freshness and volume checks, schema tests, and a ping when one device type goes quiet.
- Design for children’s privacy from the schema up: only the fields a question needs, pseudonymous IDs, grown-ups’ contact details kept apart, and no ad tags near lesson events.
- Make deletion real: a written retention policy with a deletion timeframe for every table, and a parent’s request that reaches every copy, from raw events and snapshots to extracts, backups and BigQuery time travel.
What you bring
- 4+ years in analytics engineering or data engineering, with dbt projects you built and kept healthy.
- Expert SQL on BigQuery: incremental models, nested and repeated fields, and a feel for what every run costs.
- Python for pipelines and tooling, and Apache Airflow DAGs that recover on their own after a bad night.
- Event tracking on web and mobile: you have chased one missing property across three platforms and fixed it at the source.
- Software habits for data: Git, code review, CI that runs dbt tests, and docs a new teammate can follow.
- COPPA in practice for data: retention and deletion built into a pipeline from the start, not bolted on later.
Bonus points
- You have set up a semantic layer, dbt’s or Looker’s, so every tool reads the same definitions.
- You have instrumented a native iOS or Android app, not only a website.
Why you will love it
- Two apps are about to arrive in the stores, and you decide how their data is born.
- Privacy is a design rule here, not a checkbox, and you write it into the code.
- Everyone reads from your models: growth, communications, engineering and the founders.
How to apply
Meet the octopus at tatako.com, then email [email protected] with your LinkedIn profile or portfolio. Make sure it shows a data model or pipeline that a whole company relied on.
If your experience matches the role, our team will get in touch to discuss next steps.
