Site Reliability Engineer

Bedtime rolls from coast to coast. Every lesson opens on cue, and the on-call phone stays quiet all night. That calm is your work.

Tatako is hiring its first Site Reliability Engineer to keep every lesson quick and steady whenever a family reaches for it. The cloud, our deploys, what we watch and who answers when something breaks are yours to set up and run.

About Tatako

Tatako makes short spoken English lessons for little ones. A lesson takes about five minutes, there is nothing to read, and a small round octopus keeps everyone company. He has eight arms, no socks, and usually loses count at seven.

Spanish stays the language of home, and Tatako adds a little English on top. An optional Spanish guide voice explains what to do and switches off anytime. Every lesson has three small steps: Hear it, say it. Touch it. Name it. In the last step the picture comes back without the word, and the child names it first.

The course has 369 first words and phrases, from “hello” and “mommy” to colors, animals and what the teacher says at preschool. Tatako works in the browser on any phone or tablet, and we start with Spanish-speaking families across the United States.

The role

  • Remote and full-time, open to candidates who live in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee or Arizona
  • Fluent English
  • You report directly to the founders

By day 90, every service ships through Terraform and Argo CD, no alert wakes anyone for nothing, and a full restore has been rehearsed end to end.

What you will do

  • Run Tatako on AWS and keep it lean: Amazon EKS with a Helm chart per service, Karpenter picking right-sized nodes, EC2 Spot where a restart goes unnoticed, and a monthly look at what one finished lesson costs.
  • Keep the whole cloud in code: Terraform modules for each environment, a plan on every pull request, drift caught before it surprises anyone, and Argo CD applying exactly what Git says.
  • Ship around family life: canary releases, one-step rollbacks and Argo CD sync windows that keep changes away from bath time and bedtime.
  • Measure what a family feels: SLOs for a lesson that opens, a word that plays on cue and a mark that saves, with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Honeycomb and Sentry telling one story.
  • Get ahead of the rush: KEDA schedules that add capacity before breakfast and bedtime, and the audio and pictures for all 369 words and phrases cached close to every family.
  • Make on-call livable: PagerDuty rotations, a runbook behind every alert and a written review after each incident that ends in a fix.
  • Protect what families trust us with, alongside the privacy engineer: AWS Backup copies in a separate account, restore drills on a calendar, least-privilege IAM through EKS Pod Identity and no secrets in code.

What you bring

  • 5+ years in site reliability, DevOps or platform engineering, running production on AWS for an app or website people use every day.
  • Deep Kubernetes: autoscaling that holds at peak, cluster upgrades without downtime and workloads that survive a node going away.
  • Terraform you would proudly hand to a new teammate: remote state, policy checks and nothing clicked in the console.
  • SLO craft: burn-rate alerts in place of noisy thresholds, and traces that explain a slow request on their own.
  • Go or Python for the automation you write, and Docker images kept small, patched and scanned.
  • Calm under pressure: you have carried a pager and led an incident call to a clean finish.
  • Security sense for the cloud and strict rules for children’s data, down to what a single log line is allowed to hold.

Bonus points

  • You have run both Amazon ECS and EKS and know when each one fits.
  • You have run a media-heavy service behind a CDN, where a cache miss is something people hear.

Why you will love it

  • Reliability with a face: a child waiting for the octopus to wave at bedtime.
  • The coming App Store and Google Play apps will launch on the foundations you lay now.
  • A clear measure of success: lessons open, words play on cue, marks save, and everyone sleeps.

How to apply
