QA Automation Engineer
A hand lands on both pictures at once, the phone rings mid-word, the tablet loses Wi-Fi. The lesson carries on. You tested that.
Tatako is hiring its first QA Automation Engineer to make sure every lesson works the same in the browser today and in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps coming soon. The test strategy, the suites, the device lab and the bar every release must clear are yours to build.
About Tatako
Tatako makes short spoken English lessons for little ones. A lesson takes about five minutes, there is nothing to read, and a small round octopus keeps everyone company. He has eight arms, no socks, and usually loses count at seven.
Spanish stays the language of home, and Tatako adds a little English on top. An optional Spanish guide voice explains what to do and switches off anytime. Every lesson has three small steps: Hear it, say it. Touch it. Name it. In the last step the picture comes back without the word, and the child names it first.
The course has 369 first words and phrases, from “hello” and “mommy” to colors, animals and what the teacher says at preschool. Tatako works in the browser on any phone or tablet, and we start with Spanish-speaking families across the United States.
The role
- Remote and full-time, open to candidates who live in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee or Arizona
- Fluent English
- You report directly to the founders
By day 90, the three steps run as automated tests on real phones and tablets, and nothing reaches families without passing the regression suite.
What you will do
- Automate the three steps: Hear it, say it plays each word three times with its pause, Touch it responds to the right picture, and Name it brings the picture back without its word, in Cypress, XCUITest and Espresso.
- Check audio on real devices: the lesson voice keeps its timing, the guide voice stops the moment it is switched off, and a call, silent mode or the car’s Bluetooth never leaves a lesson mute.
- Test touch the way small hands use it: a double tap, two fingers at once, a palm resting on the edge, a tap in the middle of a pause, on the smallest phone and the biggest tablet.
- Prove that progress follows the child: a word marked Can say on a phone shows up on the tablet, marks made offline in the car arrive once, and Repeat more words come back ahead of new ones.
- Build accessibility into every run: axe-core in Cypress, Accessibility Scanner and Xcode’s Accessibility Inspector on the apps, and screen reader passes on the grown-up’s marks screen.
- Write test plans with the engineers before code is merged: what could break for a family, which devices matter, which checks stay manual, and test data from seeded accounts, never a real family.
- Run the regression suite for each release: smoke tests on every pull request in GitHub Actions, a full lesson nightly on real devices, cold start checked with Macrobenchmark and a signed checklist before each store submission.
What you bring
- 5+ years in test automation for consumer web and mobile apps, with suites other engineers trusted to gate a release.
- Hands-on Appium, XCUITest and Espresso for the apps, and Cypress or Selenium WebDriver for the web, Safari included.
- Python for test tooling, fixtures and the small scripts that make a suite pleasant to run.
- CI craft: parallel runs, device clouds like BrowserStack or AWS Device Farm, and reports anyone can read at a glance.
- A firm line on flaky tests: quarantine, fix or delete, never retry until green.
- An ear and an eye for detail: you notice a pause that runs long, a sound that clips or an animation that stutters.
- Release discipline: TestFlight, Google Play testing tracks, staged rollouts and the judgment to stop one.
Bonus points
- You have tested audio timing or media playback in a shipped app.
- You have built a device lab, from picking the phones to keeping them charged.
Why you will love it
- Your tests protect five quiet minutes at breakfast, bath time or bedtime.
- You set the quality bar before the apps launch, not after.
- A product you test with your ears and fingers as much as your code.
How to apply
